Merle Liivand is a former Baltic States Champion in the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke and also a member of the Estonian National Swim Team.

She now makes her home in South Florida and is photographed on Sunday, May 17, 2020, while she goes for quick swim and waits to compete in the Olympics for Estonia) in both in the Open Water 5K and 10K competitions in the Tokyo Olympics.

Because of the postponement of the Summer Olympics because of the global coronavirus pandemic, Liivand training will continue for another year.

In the meantime, Liivand has taken up the cause of cleaning South Florida waterways by swimming every day (over four miles_ with Mermaid Monofin) to bring awareness to discarded trash in Biscayne Bay and other water channels in South Florida.
