Four Percent

Not too long ago I saw a shirt with this saying, and it really made me think.  First of all, is it really only 4% of the day?  Being a statistician, I quickly did the math and then figured out the percent we need for sleep and work in a day.  That does not leave much time left for exercise.

I know most people that are scrolling through the Finis website/blogs are likely active swimmers.  Unlike other physical activities, swimming does take more time because you just cannot run out the door like runners and start running.  More time is involved for swimmers: getting all our swim gear ready, the slow dip in the cold water and taking a shower afterwards.  This all adds up to another percent of our day.

I have been an active swimmer since I joined Master Swimming in 1994 – I am going on 29 years of my commitment to this sport.  The marathon swimming came later because I was busy raising a family of three kids.  But I was determined to get in the pool when they were little. The best time was early mornings while the kids were sleeping.  It was not always easy, but I made it happen.  I developed a habit of morning swimming that I continue to do to this day.  Since I was little, I have always been an early riser, and this worked for my family.  Of course, there were many times where I could have just turned over in bed and skip swim.  However, I found out quickly that I always felt better after a swim.  Swimming brings me pure joy and why would I not want to swim?  This explains why I swim every day!

The key word is “habit”.  Habits are what keeps us moving and the best way to form a new habit is to keep doing it over and over again.  Regardless of the type of physical activity, just keep doing it.

Think of how good everyone would feel if they did a little physical activity a day.  One hour a day will improve your health and life in many ways.  Regular physical activity will make you feel happier, help you sleep better, reduce/maintain weight and decrease chronic disease.  The release of the hormones can make you feel energized.

I know this is not possible for everyone to squeeze in time for a workout.  My hope is that you would encourage your friends and family to get active.  Tell them about the 4% of the day because when it is said that way, it really makes you think it is a not much.  Swimming is not for everyone (though it is the best for all ages), but there are so many other physical activities.  I recently got a puppy and that adds another 4% to my day for her daily walks.  Put the cell phone down or shut off Netflix and go outside!  Be a cheerleader and encourage others.  Swimmers are a great role model.  There are so many benefits from the 4% statement, your body will love you for the attention!
